It’s a place for picnics, not sunbathing. Traeth Trefor visitors often prefer to sit on the grass above the beach and drink in the scenery. “Quiet and serene, it drips history.” Another added: “Quaint, tranquil and absolutely beautiful. “For atmosphere, there is nothing like this,” said one man. Most visitors are genuinely bowled over by the place. It’s that kind of place: where time slips by slowly, allowing you the breathe in the sea air while admiring the views. More are moored by the jetty, rising and falling gently with the tides. Instead, small fishing boats are often drawn up onto the sand. Trefor granite works, it is thought, doubled as the Dragonstone fortress, ancestral seat of House Targaryen. Small wonder the place was chosen by House of the Dragon producers to film key scenes for the second series. The area is embraced by the three peaks of Y Eifl (The Rivals), where low clouds can roll over their tops and spill into the valley below as if they are alive and breathing smoke. Above the jagged pinnacles of Ynys Fawr, just along the coast, only the pterodactyls are missing. If you’re after tradition with a bit of fantasy and a touch of the prehistoric, a small, unpretentious beach on the Llŷn Peninsula may be just the ticket.Īround Traeth Trefor beach, some of the landscapes are like the land that time forgot. If it’s vast sandy beaches you want, look elsewhere.
